New York to Budapest for a Smile at a Third of the Price
Two weeks.
That was all the time Zsazsa A. needed for a smile makeover in Budapest, and she flew in from New York to get it.
She summed up the whole trip on Google last year in five short lines.
Her dentist was Dr. László Faragó at Budapest Top Dental, a clinic on Teréz körút, the grand boulevard that curves through the middle of Pest.
She called him “the absolute best.”
A coordinator named János Mócsa lined up her appointments.
And the bill?
“I paid about the third amount of money I would have in the US,” she wrote.
Interesting…
She didn’t post her invoice, so I can’t give you her exact number.
But the published prices tell most of the story.
Bookimed, which tracks patient quotes and real clinic invoices, priced a veneer in Hungary at $462 on average in August, with the cheapest at $265 a tooth.
Back home, a porcelain veneer runs about $1,732, according to CareCredit figures gathered by Medical Tourism Co. (and insurance almost never pays for cosmetic work).
So picture a ten-veneer smile.
In the US, that’s $17,320 for the teeth alone.
In Budapest, round trips from New York have shown up around $590 on Travelocity, a 2-star hotel goes for $40 to $60 a night, and a cheap meal costs $10 to $15.
I spent an hour last night doing this math (and I still can’t pronounce Teréz körút).
Add up two weeks: $590 to fly, about $700 for 14 nights, roughly $420 for food, and $2,650 for ten veneers at the floor price.
Total… $4,360.
Ten porcelain veneers
| United States, veneers only | $17,320 |
| Budapest, all-in for two weeks | $4,360 |
|
| | | “I flew to Budapest from New York, only needed two weeks to get a smile makeover.” | | Zsazsa A., New York |
|
|
In other words, the whole trip came to about a quarter of what the veneers alone would cost at home.
Not even close.
Even at Hungary’s average price, the total lands near $6,330, just over a third of the US bill (almost exactly what Zsazsa described).
Look at it another way.
The flight, hotel and food come to about $1,710, which is what two cheap weeks in Budapest would cost you anyway.
So the veneers added $2,650 to a vacation.
Spread the $4,360 over two years and it’s about $182 a month before interest (Bookimed, for one, lets patients pay at the clinic and offers installment plans).
One catch: veneers are cosmetic, so the IRS won’t let you spend HSA or FSA money on them.
Is it risk-free?
No.
Porcelain veneers mean shaving off enamel, and that can’t be undone, so get the guarantee in writing before you pay a deposit.
At Budapest Top Dental, a patient named Piet wrote in June 2025 that when part of a front tooth on his bridge broke off, the clinic made a new bridge free under its guarantee.
Meanwhile, the forint has strengthened through 2026, so Budapest costs a bit more in dollars.
Will it keep climbing? I have no idea.
But a new smile at a third of the price…
Her verdict took two words: “Very satisfied!”

“I needed major work after a series of accidents and overall failing oral health. I was apprehensive about traveling for dental work, but that was quickly alleviated when I arrived here for my first treatment. Dr. Donato picked me up from the airport and promptly took me out to breakfast and the farmers market. In between procedures, he and his wife/assistant took me to the beach and even took me to the hospital when I had kidney stones.
I returned four months later for the final procedures. It was just as easy as the first trip. They gave me back my smile and I cannot thank them enough. I came as a patient and left as family.”

UK dentists keep seeing the trips that went wrong
More than half a million Britons traveled abroad for treatment in 2024, and outbound medical travel from the UK has grown 50% in two years, according to an Implant Centre analysis published by Dentistry.co.uk on October 13. The repairs land back home. A British Dental Association survey found 94% of UK dentists had examined a patient treated overseas, and one in five had seen a case that cost more than £5,000 to fix. Budapest is a big part of that traffic: Kreativ Dental says it treats 200 to 300 UK patients a month. So before you fly, get your X-rays, the materials used and the guarantee on paper. If a clinic balks, keep shopping.

Canadians are leaving too, for a different reason
A recent study estimates 105,529 Canadians traveled abroad for medical treatment in 2025, CTV News reported on October 12. Urology, general surgery, colonoscopies and eye care topped the list. Americans mostly go for lower prices. Canadians mostly go to skip the line: Canadian Institute for Health Information data shows median waits rose for eight of 12 priority procedures in Ontario between 2017 and 2025. Ottawa’s own guidance tells travelers to get a written agreement that spells out exactly what the fee covers. Good advice on either side of the border.

Malaysia brings a bank into its medical tourism year
The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council and Maybank formalized a multi-year partnership on October 15 to put Malaysian healthcare in front of Maybank customers across Southeast Asia. It’s part of the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026 push, backed by the council’s 91 member hospitals. Meanwhile, the state of Sarawak on Borneo saw medical travelers jump to more than 104,000 in 2025 from about 76,000 a year earlier, The Borneo Post reported. The catch… about 70% came from one country, Indonesia, and a panelist at this week’s Borneo Global Meditourism Congress called for a central body to coordinate the trade. This is one to watch.
