Three weeks in Medellín for the price of one American tooth
Laureles, Medellín.
A retired teacher from Arizona checked into a boutique hotel in this leafy part of town and stayed three weeks.
Her weekdays went to appointments at a dental clinic near El Poblado. On weekends she rode out to the lakeside town of Guatapé or wandered the botanical garden.
She flew home with two implants, a set of porcelain veneers and a full cleaning.
And the total, flights and hotel included, came to… roughly what one implant costs back home without insurance.
In other words, she paid for a single American tooth and got a new smile with a Colombian vacation thrown in.
“I’ve been putting this off for five years,” she told a writer from Colombia Move over breakfast.
She’d figured clinics abroad meant shortcuts and bad outcomes. The Medellín offices she walked into beat every dental office she knew in Phoenix.
So what does a tooth cost there today?
I spent an evening pulling current price lists from Medellín clinics. My coffee went cold twice.
Colombia Care Dental lists a single implant with its crown at $1,200, using FDA-approved BioHorizons posts and crowns milled in its own lab.
Over in El Poblado, International Smiles charges $1,620 for a Straumann implant with abutment and crown. Its founder, Dr. Adriana Castano, is an American Board-certified periodontist licensed in Florida and Texas.
Back home, that same tooth starts around $4,000, and insurance rarely pays for it.
Seventy percent cheaper on the very first tooth.

|
But there’s a catch…
Bone needs three to six months to grow around the post, so most patients fly down twice: once for surgery, once for the crown.
Colombia Care’s own math, with both trips, flights, hotels and meals, puts a single tooth at $2,850 to $4,200 all-in.
Even with two round trips, it still beats the American sticker price.
Spread $2,850 over a year and it works out to about $238 a month… less than most car payments.
Need three teeth? The flights don’t triple. The savings do.
One warning before you book.
JCI accredits hospitals, not most dental offices (your dentist back home doesn’t have it either), so the thing to check here is the dentist.
Ask for the license number, the implant brand and an itemized written plan before you pay a peso. And get the warranty in writing, because fixing a cracked crown from Arizona is the hard part.
Will three-week dental trips become normal for Americans? We’ll see.
Five years is long enough to wait.

Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai
Facelift, neck, arm & thigh lift · May 2026 · indicure.com
Pamela Boyd, 54, had already paid for an arm lift in the United States with well-known surgeons, and she didn’t like how it turned out.
So she chose the surgeon first: Dr. Shraddha Deshpande, a Mumbai plastic surgeon with two fellowships abroad. The facilitator IndiCure set up a video consult, and planning took about nine months, including a pause for family.
In May 2026 she flew more than 30 hours, with her husband, to Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central, a 350-bed JCI-accredited hospital. The work came in two stages to cut time under anesthesia: a revision arm lift and thigh lift first, then a facelift and neck lift.
She spent five to six days in the hospital across both stages and about two weeks in Mumbai, recovering at a hotel on Nariman Point near Marine Drive. Staff checked on her daily, and she liked the food enough to meet the chef.
A week after stage one, still swollen, she said the new arms already looked better than her US result. After stage two: “the improvements are amazing.”
IndiCure didn’t publish her price, so ask for a written, itemized quote.

Americans are flying to China for cancer drugs
KFF Health News reported on Oct. 20 that a growing number of Americans with cancer are traveling to China, or sending relatives, for drugs and trials not yet sold here. Max Doppelt flew to Shanghai and came back with 26 boxes of sunvozertinib for his mother, Debbie, a 60-year-old New York jeweler, for about $10,000. He knows of at least 30 Americans who have done the same. The FDA licensed the drug in July 2025, yet it still wasn’t on US shelves in mid-October. The risk: once you leave the US system, FDA safety checks don’t come with you. Talk to your oncologist before you book anything.

A bank now points customers to Malaysian hospitals
On Oct. 15, the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council signed a multi-year partnership with Maybank to connect the bank’s customers across Southeast Asia with Malaysia’s 91 MHTC-accredited healthcare facilities. The first rollout serves Maybank Premier clients in Cambodia, with health perks for customers in Indonesia. It’s part of Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026, and the numbers behind it are big: about 1.84 million healthcare travelers in 2025, bringing in around RM3.34 billion. A bank acting as a referral desk for hospitals… interesting. Could an American card issuer try the same thing? It’s not clear yet.

One US IVF cycle could pay for several in Prague
A basic own-egg IVF cycle in the Czech Republic runs about €2,500 to €3,500, according to FertilityClinicsAbroad’s 2026 price guide, and donor-egg cycles about €5,500 to €7,000. The same guide cites a July 2026 study that put the average US cycle at $29,000. Budget extra for medication, often €1,000 to €1,500 and rarely bundled, plus two trips. One big caveat: Czech clinics treat heterosexual couples only, and the cutoff at transfer is 48 years and 364 days. In other words, check that you qualify before you price flights.
